Author / Illustrator Profile Shirley was born in Liverpool and grew up in the coastal town of Hoylake. As a child Shirley and her two older sisters would dress up, make up stories and act them out to anyone who would watch. At the age of sixteen Shirley went to Liverpool Art School followed by the Ruskin School, Oxford. In 1978 Shirley won the Kate Greenaway Medal for writing and illustrating ‘Dogger’. The idea came to her when a stuffed toy fell out of a cupboard she was tidying, and it reminded her of a family drama that once happened. Shirley is married to John, an architect and has three children who are now grown up. Her books have included Up and Up, Alfie stories, Chips and Jessie, The Snow Lady, Stories by Firelight, and she has illustrated more than two hundred books. Shortlisted Title |
