Robert Swindells was born in 1939 in Bradford, the eldest of five children. He left school at 15 and went to work as a copywriter for a local newspaper. At 17 he joined the R.A.F. for three years. He then worked as a clerk, engineer and printer before training at Huddersfield and Bradford to become a teacher. Robert is married with two daughters and has three grandchildren. He won the Longer Novels section of the Sheffield Children's Book Award in 1996 for ‘The Unbeliever’, and was shortlisted for both ‘Nightmare Stairs’ and ‘Smash’ in 1998.
